Postal Officials Closing Evansdale Post Office Next Month

EVANSDALE- Postal authorities have decided the fate of one of the larger post offices on the state's potential closing list.

The post office in Evansdale, located near Waterloo, will officially close on October 21

.   Postal officials conducted several meetings earlier this year that brought protests from both area residents and political leaders.  However, that did not sway the USPS from going ahead with closing plans for Evansdale.

Keith Bodecker, a customer doing business there Friday, said the alternative of running to Waterloo for postal business is not that attractive for Evansdale customers.

“Sometimes I barely get done with work soon enough to get here (Evansdale) so three and a half miles through Waterloo, into Waterloo, with no real parking, is hardly attractive,” Bodecker said.

Postal officials said Evansdale, which is a branch of the Waterloo post office, did approximately $250,000 worth of postal business last year.  That would rank it high on the list compared to the mainly small town post offices facing closure.  But a postal spokesperson said the need to cut costs made it necessary to close Evansdale next month.
