BACKGROUND
CORALVILLE — In 2010, Hy-Vee bought land for a second Coralville grocery store, with an adjacent gas station and convenience store.
While the gas station and convenience store opened in 2016, the grocery store was delayed.
Originally, the store was expected to have 95,000 square feet and open in the spring of 2017. But construction was postponed in May 2016 while the West Des Moines-based company evaluated the store's design and layout.
The site at 3285 Crosspark Road is north of Interstate 80, just off Coral Ridge Avenue between Oakdale Boulevard and Forevergreen Road — an arterial sure to get busier when crews finish constructing a new interchange with Forevergreen and Interstate 380 and improve the road.
After a rethinking, construction of the new store — now 85,000 square feet — began last fall with the initial hope of having it open by the end of this year.
WHAT'S HAPPENED SINCE
'For right now, we're still planning on a fall opening,' Hy-Vee spokeswoman Amy McCoy said last week, adding she couldn't be more specific yet about the date.
The store construction will put that venue at the border of Coralville and North Liberty, an area growing rapidly.
The Iowa Department of Transportation expects to open the new interchange at Forevergreen Road in the fall of 2019.
This will be Hy-Vee's second store in Coralville — the other one being at 1914 Eighth St.
The employee-owned corporation says it operates more than 245 retail locations across eight Midwestern states with annual sales of $10 billion.
