My Biz: Iowa Sheds’ storage units are built to last

All of Iowa Sheds' backyard storage units have a feature that distinguishes them from their competitors.
'If you don't see the bolts, it is not an Iowa Shed,” said owner Kyle Hane, grinning.
The fact that their units are bolted together, Hane said, means they will not separate.
'Your standard shed is built with screws and nails,” he said. 'Take any pieces of wood, put them outside for a long enough time - especially in Iowa - and the moisture is going to start to separate the wood. It'll bow and then you get water leakage and critters inside the building.
'We are the only company out there that does the bolt-together process,” he added. 'Over time siding and roofing is going to get worn down on any structure, but what you won't see in our buildings is that leaning, falling apart, or caving in, and that's because of the bolts.”
The sheds are built and delivered in sections, which makes the installation cleaner and takes less time. The company delivers its sheds for free all over Iowa.
'These buildings are considered modular, or non-permanent,” Hane said, 'so depending on what your county does for tax assessment, that might keep them off your property assessment.”
Hane, along with his wife, Nicole, father-in-law Mark and three other family members opened Iowa Sheds five years ago in Walford.
'I think coming to Iowa in the first place was an incredibly great decision,” Hane said. 'I'm a native Arizonan, but I like Iowa people better and the economic conditions are stronger in Iowa.”
The company does not focus on customized buildings, but does have the capability to construct them.
Hane is adamant about continued communication with customers after their product has been delivered.
'We want our customers to know if there is any change that they can text, call, or send emails,” he said. 'You are buying a building from us. It's a big investment and we find it incredibly important to be upfront and open.”
