It is a business that's sure to turn some heads, and owners see that as a good thing.
“I think you have to have a sense of humor, and the people here are smart enough to know that,” said co-owner Deb Wedemeier.
Cheba Hut Toasted Subs, a marijuana-themed sub shop, is the first of its kind in the Midwest. The franchise has had great success in places like Arizona and Colorado. Wedemeier, a Cedar Rapids native, said she expects the restaurant to do well in Iowa City.
“It's a very unique theme,” she said. “Our goal is to have good food that everyone will enjoy.”
Wedemeier achnowledges that the theme of Cheba Hut is a bit controversial, but she said that is expected. After all, the sub-line on the companies website reads: ”The only thing fried is the occasional customer.”
Customers shouldn't expect to find anything illegal at Cheba Hut, located at 314 E. Burlington Street. “Just fresh ingredients and a fun atmosphere,” said Wedemeier.
