The Iowa Utilities Board (IUB), with assistance from the Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT), has updated and created a new electronic version of Iowa's electric service territory map.
This interactive resource allows online users to review local electric service information using a statewide map that links to county and then local area maps, in addition to local utility Web sites.
This resource can be accessed by visiting the IUB's Web site, iub.iowa.gov, following the “Energy” link at the top, and then “Electrical Service Area Boundaries.” It can also be found at iowadot.gov.
Those seeking to access county-specific electric service area maps and information can click on any county on the statewide map. Also on the county-level, clicking on the name of the local electric service provider provides access to each utility's Web site resources. Many county maps also link to detailed maps of particular (highlighted) areas.
Designated electric utility service territories, and related maps, have existed in Iowa since 1978. The Iowa Legislature and the IUB have found well-defined electric service territories to be in the public interest for providing the most adequate and economical electric service to Iowans, eliminating unnecessary duplication of high-cost utility facilities, and strengthening local economies.
The IUB can approve modifications of an electric utility's exclusive service area if it finds it to be in the public interest.
Questions about Iowa's electric service areas or the new electric service area map may be directed to the IUB Records and Information Center at (515) 725-7300.
