Apr. 17, 2020 3:54 pm
The Iowa Insurance Division will be a sponsor of the EVERFI National Financial Bee - a first-of-its-kind remote financial literacy challenge for students in seventh through 10th grade, set for next week.
EVERFI, a Washington, D.C.-based digital education program, started the five-day challenge to provide 'an opportunity for students to have some fun and learn critical financial concepts at home while social distancing,” the state insurance division said Friday.
Open to participants 13 to 18 years old, the bee - to be held April 20 through 24 - will feature iterative daily digital lessons, geared toward teaching topics such as spending, saving, credit, debt, employment, income, investing and insurance.
Afterward, participants will have the opportunity to write a capstone essay about a financial goal and how they plan to attain it.
The first-place essayist will receive a $10,000 college scholarship, with $6,000 and $4,000 for the respective second and third-place finishers.
'During Financial Literacy Month, the Iowa Insurance Division is committed to engaging Iowans and increasing financial literacy,” Iowa Insurance Commissioner Doug Ommen said in a news release.
'We are proud to be supporting parents and students at this time through the National Financial Bee and hope it helps drive dinner-table conversations about important financial topics.”
