Iowa farmers have agreed to increase a corn production fee that helps pay for research, promotion and educational projects.
The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and the Iowa Corn Promotion Board said Thursday that preliminary results show more than 70 percent of farmers who voted agreed to raise the fee to a penny a bushel. The last increase, to three-quarters of a cent, was approved in 2008.
The department has 30 days to verify the results.
The corn checkoff is collected on corn sold commercially, but not on grain used on farms.
