MARION - A state-of-the-art security system installed at the new Linn-Mar Community School District stadium will help investigators resolve incidents, deter vandalism and provide high definition footage of practices and games.
Interconnex, a Cedar Rapids-based computer and physical security integrator, designed and installed the system that includes three high definition pan-tilt-zoom cameras and video management software. The system is connected to the district's computer network so administrators can log on from anywhere and easily search and view the video.
The cameras and video management system primarily monitor the stadium, parking lot and nearby grounds. When games or practices are occurring, two of the cameras can be repositioned to focus on the field to provide high definition video.
The cameras are joystick-operated by a student videographer in the press box. The high-quality footage is downloaded into a system used by coaches and players in various Iowa school districts to dissect and strategize plays.
Linn-Mar Associate Athletic Director Tonya Moe said security was the primary reason for the security system.
"We wanted to provide a safe experience for players, students and guests," Moe said. "At the same time, we wanted to protect our investment in the new stadium - when you have new facilities, things can happen.
"The new equipment and software make it easy to quickly search footage and we're provided with clear quality footage that we did not have before."
Before the new security system was installed, Linn-Mar used standard, consumer-grade handheld camcorders for game footage.
"Our football program relies on quality video - this new system has been a great teaching tool," said Linn-Mar Head Football Coach Bob Forsyth. "We use the system on a daily basis and have found that it's something we can't do without."
Marc Meyer, president of Inteconnex, said the stadium security system will provide a framework for future upgrades. There are no annual software maintenance fees and by installing high definition cameras, the district requires fewer cameras with better results.
