Russ Gerdin, the founder, CEO and chairman of North Liberty-based Heartland Express Inc., has retired for health reasons.
Heartland Express announced the retirement in a statement released Friday.
The company's board appointed 41-year-old Michael Gerdin, president and director, to assume the additional responsibilities vacated by Russell Gerdin, his father.
Russ Gerdin, 70, underwent a successful liver transplant in September 2006 after being diagnosed with cancer. Heartland Express announced in January that he was taking a leave of absence for health reasons, which were not disclosed.
