Groundbreaking set for Intermec Technologies in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS -- Intermec Technologies Corp.  will hold a ground breaking ceremony at 11 a.m. Tuesday to formally mark the start of construction on a $12.5 million, two-story, 81,000 square-foot facility in downtown Cedar Rapids.

The building, at 601 Third St. SE, will replace the company's existing facility at 550 Second St. SE  It will house about 250 employees and host many of the company's engineering functions.

Projected for completion in June 2013, Intermec Technologies said the total investment for the project is $28 million, including furnishings and equipment.

Everett, Wash.-based Intermec Technologies develops and manufactures rugged mobile business computers used in a variety of retail and warehousing applications.

The Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance worked with Intermec to help secure state and local funding for the construction project. The Cedar Rapids City Council last month approved a development agreement that will provide the company some property tax relief over 10 years.
