From the Bureau: Suggestions for year-end charitable giving

As 2023 draws to a close, it’s a good time to make end-of-year giving plans.
Charitable giving is important all year and particularly throughout the holiday season when many charities receive a large portion of their annual gifts.
The Wise Giving Alliance, at give.org, is a standards-based charity evaluator that verifies the trustworthiness of national charities by evaluating them on the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
To assist with your contribution choices, the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance offers the following considerations.
Consider alternatives to cash
If money is tight, there are other ways to help. Consider donating nonperishable food to food banks. Some communities organize donations of warm coats in good condition. Don’t forget the charities that welcome donated toys for needy children.
Help earthquake recovery
In the past year, earthquakes have caused devastating damage. To address immediate needs, relief organizations conduct rescues, distribute meals, offer medical care and provide shelter. Impacted areas have long-term recovery needs, with charities and other organizations involved in helping families rebuild homes, schools and repair roads.
Address community needs
Donors are heartbroken when they hear about tragedies involving shootings, many of which have received significant attention in the 2023 headlines. Donors responded to crowd-funding requests to help or sought to support organizations addressing gun issues. Donations help recovering communities as they seek to rebuild trust and address continuing medical needs.
Remember Maui
The devastating August wildfires in Maui, Hawaii, caused unbelievable damage and burned thousands of acres. Recovery and rebuilding will take years to complete. Many organizations are working to help this area repair and improve.
Providing Ukraine Relief
International relief organizations work to provide help to areas of Ukraine. As the war continues, demand also continues for medicines, food and other urgent items. Visit give.org for BBB accredited charities.
Assist relief in Israel, Gaza
For those seeking to help victims and families impacted by the war between Israel and Hamas, there are many opportunities to donate. See a list of BBB accredited charities addressing these needs at give.org.
Remember favorite causes
Don’t forget to donate to your favorite organizations as well. We also recommend taking the time to visit give.org to verify if your chosen charity meets the Standards for Charitable Accountability.
Reminder
If itemizing deductions on your tax returns, consider the condition of any items you donate. The IRS requires, for deductibility, that items be in good condition or better. Assigning value to donated goods is your responsibility. For non-cash contributions totaling more than $500, an IRS Form 8283 must be attached to the tax return.
