Former A&W set for demolition this month
Sep. 6, 2013 1:31 pm
City Hall continues its federally financed, flood-recovery demolition program, with the former A & W Family Restaurant on Ellis Boulevard NW among the latest 13 properties in line to come down.
City Hall, with the encouragement of the Northwest Neighbors Neighborhood Association, set aside its demolition plan in 2011 for the A & W, but a local developer who had agreed with city to renovate the property did not follow through. The city acquired the property through its flood-recovery buyout program.
In the latest round of demolitions, the city also will take down 12 more flood-damaged buyout homes.
To date, the program has demolished 1,123 residential structures, 572 accessory structures and 122 commercial structures, the city reported on Friday.
The A&W drive-in in northwest Cedar Rapids' Time Check neighborhood was badly damaged in the 2008 flood, and has not reopened. Photographed on Tuesday, June 4, 2013. (Liz Martin/The Gazette)
