Grants included in the Iowa Department of Transportation's fiscal year 2017 aviation program will cover a portion of the cost of two capital improvement projects at The Eastern Iowa Airport.
The Iowa Transportation Commission approved an allocation of $325,246 from the commercial service vertical infrastructure program as the state's share of the $16.3 million third phase of a $55 million passenger terminal remodeling project.
The largest phase of the multiyear terminal update will expand the security checkpoint, add a second level with jet bridges to the B concourse, relocate food and beverage facilities to the secure area of the C concourse, and provide additional room for passengers waiting to board aircraft.
Construction is expected to begin in 2017 after spring break. The airport will not incur any long-term debt or need to sell any bonds to fund the terminal upgrade.
IDOT also has allocated $267,825 for the state's share of a $357,100 self-service fueling system for general aviation aircraft.
Pilots will be able to fuel their aircraft without involvement of the airport's fixed base operator. The fueling system is expected to be operational in spring 2017.
