Iowa's corn and soybean crops are in good shape, despite last week's heavy rain in northern Iowa and strong winds that flattened corn fields in central and eastern Iowa.
The weekly crop report on Monday shows 80 percent of the corn is in good to excellent condition. Fifty-six percent is tasseling, just behind the average. Eighty-two percent of the soybean crop is in good to excellent condition. Sixty-one percent is blooming. The average is 62 percent.
While parts of northern Iowa saw heavy rain, parts of southern Iowa need some rain. Officials say some areas in southeast Iowa haven't had measureable rain this month.
Last week was also marked by excessive heat and humidity. Cattle are suffering from the heat as well as from fly infestations and pink eye.
Crops lay flat in a field at the intersection of Wiley's Road and North Center Point Road after being blown down by high winds as storms moved through the area early Monday, July 11, 2011 near Troy Mills, Iowa. (Brian Ray/The Gazette)
