UPDATE: The signs atop the former Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Cedar Rapids are scheduled to be removed mid-morning today.
Two lanes of westbound First Avenue in front of the hotel were closed off at 6 a.m. The signs are slated to be removed around 10 a.m.
The Crowne Plaza signs, measuring 14 feet tall and 44 feet wide, were sold to MediaQuest Signs of Cedar Rapids for removal and disposal.
Tim Micek of Mediaquest says crews will be using a Coonrod crane to span the 16 floors. They hope to have the signs on the east and west sides of the hotel removed by late Tuesday afternoon.
The signs will go into storage, Micek says. They will either be resold to another Crowne Plaza property or, more likely, recycled.
A crane is prepared to remove a large sign from the now closed Crowne Plaza Hotel this morning, Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011. (Jeff Raasch/The Gazette)
