A 1958 Edsel Ranger collectible car is among 11 vehicles owned by a Cedar Rapids landlord convicted of mail and tax fraud that will go across the auction block next month to repay creditors in his bankruptcy.
Eleven vehicles owned by Robert Miell will be sold at auction at 9 a.m. Sept. 10 as part of a larger vehicle auction at Backes Auction in Raymond.
Miell, 57, owned more rental property than anyone else in Linn County before a federal investigation revealed he had made fraudulent insurance reports on 145 properties and defrauded tenants of their rent deposits. He was found guilty by a jury in January 2009 of two counts of tax fraud, and the following year pleaded guilty to 18 counts of mail fraud and two counts of perjury.
Miell was sentenced last October 2010 to 20 years in prison and ordered to pay more than $728,000 in restitution. He had already filed for bankruptcy reorganization, but was forced by creditors and the federal bankruptcy trustee to involuntarily liquidate his property, including his apartment buildings and rental property.
The auction is coming more than a year after six other court-ordered auctions to liquidate Miell's collectible guitar collection, household goods and other belongings to pay back creditors.
