Approximately 500 people working at the Verizon building at 500 Second Ave. SE in downtown Cedar Rapids were chased out of the building for a burst water pipe on Tuesday.
Linda Laughlin with Verizon said the repairs should be finished either today or tomorrow. The water pipe that broke was the elbow pipe on a sprinkler system located in a stairwell. Company officials are not sure if the burst was weather-related.
Workers were sent home for the day, but many are working remotely. Those involved with networking operations went to Davenport to continue those services.
