CEDAR RAPIDS — Approximately 100 employees at a Cedar Rapids packaging company have been told this week that their positions are being eliminated as the plant will close in early October.
Smurfit Westrock Co., which operates the plant at 1061 Blairs Ferry Rd. NE, has filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice (WARN) with the state. The employees were told Aug. 5 and the reductions are expected to occur on Oct. 4.
The company has had a series of announced closures in 2025, including a mill in St. Paul, Minn., and other packaging facilities in Texas and Germany.
The company operates more than 500 converting operations and approximately 62 mills across 40 countries, according to the company’s website. The company produces renewable, recyclable and recycled materials for sustainable packaging solutions.
