Cedar Rapids fitness center going 24-7

CEDAR RAPIDS - The owners of two Cedar Rapids 'low model” fitness centers will convert one of them to a 24-hour facility on Aug. 6.

Chelsey Oberreuter and her brother, Curtis Meier, own and operate iGYMs, at 1100 Blairs Ferry Rd. NE and 2725 Edgewood Parkway SW.

The facilities offer personal training, group fitness classes that include yoga or the high-intensity Tabata, cardio equipment, free weights/circuit, strength/functional training equipment and locker rooms and showers.

Oberreuter said member and non-member requests and a desire to add more value drove the decision to make the southwest gym a 24-hour facility,

'We had people tell us that they liked our facilities, but they just couldn't work out in our time frame,” Oberreuter said. 'Others told us that we are closed on Sunday and that's when they have time to dedicate to fitness.”

iGYM is a sister company to the Midwest Athletic Club (MAC) fitness centers in Cedar Rapids, Marion and Fairfax, owned by the Meier family. Oberreuter said the MAC has operated 24-hour fitness centers since 2005.

'In Cedar Rapids, we obviously have a lot of shift workers,” she said. '...

Our lifestyles are so different these days with work, children and activities. I had an iGYM member tell me this week that being open 24 hours will allow him to come in at 3:30 a.m. and work out before he goes to the office.”

Oberreuter said the two iGYM locations have a total of about 2,600 members.

As for the future of iGYM, Oberreuter said expansion likely will occur in the southern end of the Corridor.

'We have had a lot of members ask when we plan to open a club in North Liberty,” she said. 'They work in Cedar Rapids, but would like to have a club closer to their home.”
