What was the last book you read?
“Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen,” by Christopher McDougall. The subject is the Tarahumara tribe living in the remote Copper Canyons in the Mexican state of Chihuahua.
The Tarahumara are legendary for their ability to run extreme distances in inhospitable conditions without breaking a sweat or getting injured. They don't have all the high-tech running gear, but rather, they wear little more than leather flip flops.
They are superathletes who are elite runners of the developed world even though their society and technology are 500 years behind it.
Where is your favorite place to get away?
The native prairie I am restoring. Working with plants and soil you can completely escape the cellphone, email and the countless other distractions that can add stress to your day.
What's the best day of the week to be in a meeting?
What's the best time of day?
There isn't one. I'd rather be “doing” rather than sitting in a meeting listening to people talk about what they are “going” to do.
What do you always have close at hand at your desk?
Water. Staying hydrated keeps you awake and it keeps you from getting hungry.
Most people who “graze” at work think they are hungry - they aren't. They are dehydrated.
Did you start out in this line of work?
Growing up with a father, an uncle and many friends whose parents were lawyers I never really considered any other profession.
