Small business of the week: U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, last week named Welter Storage Equipment of Jones County as her “Small Business of the Week.” Lloyd and Joyce Welter started the business on their family farm during the 1980s farm crisis. Lloyd Welter, following two years in the U.S. Army, saw a need for shelving, pallet racks and storage equipment in Monticello. Today, Welter Storage Equipment sells new and reconditioned warehouse equipment and office furniture acquired through auctions, liquidations, bankruptcies and closeouts and also provides storage equipment and forklifts. The business operates in Cedar Rapids, Dubuque and Monticello. The Welters’ sons — Ron, Dave, Dean and Bob — now own and operate the business, which celebrated its 41st anniversary in 2023. Ernst, the ranking member on the Senate’s Small Business Committee, is recognizing one small Iowa business each week in Iowa’s 99 counties.
