Axel’s Sports Grill to close in Cedar Rapids this Sunday

Axel's Sports Grill in Cedar Rapids will close at the end of the day Sunday.

Riley's Restaurant Group and developer Todd Culver announced the closure Friday in a media relase. According to the release, a new restaurant from an Iowa City group will replace Axel's, 951 Blairs Ferry Road NE, but further details were not provided.

'Axel's Sports Grill has enjoyed serving customers in the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Area, and we are very grateful for all of the local support that we have received,' Riley's Restaurant Group said in the news release.

Axel's itself had replaced an existing restaurant, Rock Top Bar & Grill.

The new restaurant is expected to open in the spring.

Other Riley's Group restaurants remain open including Butcher Block Steakhouse and Broken Spoke Tavern, and a new banquet and event space called The Venue, 568 Boyson Road NE. The group said a new restaurant Bourbon Creek Smokehouse will open soon in downtown Cedar Rapids.
