Class 4A No. 4 Johnston scored five runs in the middle innings and prevented a late rally to hold on for a 6-3 victory over No. 3 Iowa City High Monday night at Mercer Park in a game that mimicked a postseason atmosphere.
Iowa City Liberty’s Mason Waterbury has been nearly untouchable this season. He pitched a complete-game, one-hitter in a shutout victory over Class 4A No. 3 Iowa City High on Monday night, improving to 8-0 this year.
The Gazette’s 2023 Male Athlete of the Year is Ben Kueter of Iowa City High. He was a two-time all-state linebacker in football, a four-time unbeaten state wrestling champion, a Drake Relays medalist and a member of two state tournament baseball teams.
