Stormin’ Norman back for second children’s book

We first met Andy Allen and his dog Norman in 'Stormin' Norman: The Soggy Doggy.”
Allen, an elementary school teacher in Cedar Rapids, introduced Norman to young readers in a story that takes place during the Floods of 2008 in Eastern Iowa.
In 'The Bark in the Park,” Allen takes on the issue of bullying with Norman and a cast of other canine characters.
The book takes place at a dog park. Frank, the bully dog, doesn't want to let anyone else in for a drink and is mean to the other dogs.
Norman decides to teach Frank a lesson. Will Frank see the error of his ways and turn over a kinder paw?
Each of the dogs is expertly created with unique personalities.
The characters are perfectly matched to the breed; the illustrations tell the story as much as the words do.
'The Bark in the Park” uses a rhyming scheme, similar to Allen's first book.
Though it's challenging to write in that style, Allen says it helps early readers identify words if they know the last word in the sentence is going to rhyme.
The topic - bullying - also was a challenge, says Allen, who wanted to open a conversation about empathy and the Golden Rule.
Kids are naturally drawn to animal stories, he says. So Norman's story will continue. He hopes to write a Christmas tale with Norman and eventually, tackle the heavy topic of a death of a loved one.
For now, Allen and Norman are looking forward to their own days in the park.
Norman isn't the only dog in the Allen household. Simon also lives with Allen and his wife, Mary, and their two cats.
