IOWA CITY - Lena Dunham will be in Iowa City on Tuesday for a sold-out event at 7 p.m. at the Englert, 221 E. Washington St., Iowa City. The event, presented by Prairie Lights Books, celebrates the release of Dunham's new memoir, 'Not that Kind of Girl,” released on Sept. 30. Dunham will hold a conversation with novelist Curtis Sittenfeld; poet Jenny Zhang will open the event. Both Sittenfeld and Zhang are University of Iowa Writers' Workshop graduates.
Dunham, creator and star of the popular HBO cable TV show, 'Girls,” and the show received local attention earlier this year when, in season cliffhanger, Dunham's character was accepted into the Iowa Writers' Workshop.
The University of Iowa rejected a request from HBO to film on campus because officials said they were concerned about potential distractions and with the plot line, which they were worried would cast the university in a negative light.
One of the show's writers, Sarah Heyward, is an alumna of the UI's MFA in English program, nationally and internationally heralded for producing Pulitzer Prize winners, U.S. Poets Laureate, and National Book Award winners.
Even though the UI rejected the request from HBO, the show's director has reportedly told other media that they will still shoot in the Iowa City area.
The show, which follows a group of young adults living in New York City, resumes its fourth season in 2015.
