Carole Gauger credits John and Sandra Hudson of Iowa City and her late friend, author Anneliese Tisdale of Cedar Rapids, with persuading her to write about her life with horses.
She joined the writers’ group nurtured by the Hudsons that meets at the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library in Cedar Rapids. The Hudsons also have been involved with the Gray Hawk Writers group that meets at the MidWestOne Bank conference room in Coralville.
The Gray Hawks have been meeting for 25 years, and 16 of the writers have published their second collection of essays, poems and stories, “Fortnightly: Memoirs by the Gray Hawk Writers,” to mark the group’s anniversary. The book is a companion to the “Yesterdays” anthology published on the group’s 15th anniversary. The books are for sale on Amazon and at Prairie Lights Books in Iowa City.
The highlights of “Fortnightly” include an excellent bit of research and writing by Sandra Hudson on Iowa artist Grant Wood’s ties to Hollywood; some original thinking on creativity by John Hudson; and clever, amusing memories from David A. Jepsen.
The book also includes an entertaining piece by Carolyn Kueny about “quasi-criminal, though highly educated” relatives and what her mother was really doing at the Iowa Summer Writers’ Festival; a thoughtful piece on abortion by retired nurse practitioner Jeanne Liston; and a well-written story, “Pine Lake,” by James O’Gorman.
The book ends with helpful guidelines if you would like to start a writers’ group of your own
