Arizona State's men's basketball coach is working Cedar Rapids hard
Mike Hlas Apr. 13, 2010 12:51 pm
In the heart of Hawkdom last week, Arizona State men's basketball coach Herb Sendek swooped into Cedar Rapids to watch 6-foot-8 Jefferson High School forward Jarrod Uthoff and 6-5 Washington High School guard Josh Oglesby.
Both players are juniors. Both were offered scholarships by Sendek, whose ASU team went to the NIT in the season just ended.
This story from ASUdevils.com -- which I learned of via Tom Kakert's Hawkeyereport.com -- tells the tale. Excerpts:
"Immediately afterward [Sendek] called me and let me know that they both had offers and by what he saw after one viewing he could say they are guys that would fit in with what he does at Arizona State and that he wanted to be involved in their recruitment and hoped that they would be interested in Arizona State," (Iowa Barnstormers Coach Jamie) Johnson said. "After talking to them, they're both very interested."
Albany, Creighton, Indiana State, Northern Iowa and South Dakota State have reportedly extended offers to Oglesby, with the offer from Sendek and ASU the first from a major conference.
Uthoff ... reportedly has offers from Albany, Creighton, Indiana State, and Northern Iowa.
I haven't seen Uthoff play, I'm sorry to say. I have seen Oglesby, and was impressed.
It's April. These kids are going to play a lot of ball this spring and summer in front of major-college coaches. Presumably,
Iowa's Fran McCaffery will be one of them.
