Hampton pleads guilty; Bernstine pleads not guilty

Iowa running back Jewel Hampton plead guilty to a public intoxication charge stemming from an incident in downtown Iowa City on Saturday morning, according to Iowa court documents.

Iowa defensive back Jordan Bernstine plead not guilty to a public intoxication charge connected to the same incident at Vito's on the Ped Mall, according to court documents.

Hampton faces a $195 fine. He was also issued a ticket for being in a bar illegally after 10 p.m. Iowa City's new 21-only ordinance that went into effect at midnight June 1. That ticket carries a $735 fine.

According to the complaints, Hampton's blood-alcohol level was .091 and Bernstine's was .127.

Hampton, a sophomore, was arrested after Iowa City Police responded to a fight in progress at Vito's. Bernstine, a junior, was arrested after "hampering" the arrest of Hampton, according to Lt. Bill Campbell.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz issued a statement Saturday that said the matter will be "handled internally."

According to Iowa athletics department penalties, a first-offense alcohol arrest results in a first strike in a three-strike program. A first strike means the student-athlete must complete an alcohol education program, be put on notice and perform 20 hours of community service.

A second strike means automatic suspension pending a full alcoholism assessment and 30 hours of community service. A third strike is dismissal.

An athlete receiving a ticket for underage possession of alcohol must perform six to eight hours of alcohol education.

Of course, the players could also face additional punishment, including suspension from practice and games. That is up to the coach in the individual sport.

Hampton missed the 2009 season with a torn ACL, but participated in spring practice. He's in competition in a crowded backfield that includes three sophomores.

Bernstine suffered a broken ankle in August and redshirted last season.

According to the Iowa football Twitter feed, incoming freshman and upperclassmen reported for physicals and voluntary summer conditioning workouts Monday morning.
