Women's basketball roundup: Iowa State upsets No. 10 Texas; Drake clinches Missouri Valley title outright

AUSTIN, Texas — Iowa State not only boosted its NCAA Tournament resume Friday night, it also captured a pretty big victory in the history of the program.

Iowa State (17-11, 8-9 Big 12) made 8 of 20 shots from 3-point range to upset No. 10 Texas (21-7, 14-3 Big 12), 70-66, at the Erwin Center.

The victory was ISU's first over a top-10 team since beating Texas two years ago, when it was ranked No. 8, and gave the Cyclones their first four-game conference winning streak since 2013.

The Cyclones held the lead for the majority of the game, but it came down to the wire. Down 68-66, Texas' Ariel Atkins attempted to tie the game with 6 seconds left, but her jumper was off the mark. Bridget Carleton corralled the rebound and was quickly fouled. She then sealed the victory by sinking both free throws to give the Cyclones a 70-66 lead.

Carleton had 18 points on 7-for-10 shooting and Seanna Johnson poured in 22 points to lead the Cyclones. Johnson equaled her career high in 3-pointers with four.

Jadda Buckley chipped in with 14 points and five assists.

Iowa State returns home for Senior Night on Monday, hosting Oklahoma State in a 7 p.m. tipoff.

DRAKE 70, NORTHERN IOWA 57 

At the Knapp Center in Des Moines, UNI was able to keep the game close in the first half with four lead changes in the first two quarters, but second half shooting struggles plagued the Panthers down the line. The Panthers (20-7, 13-3 MVC) were led by senior Madison Weekly, who finished the game with 19 points, including three 3-pointers.

Drake (23-4, 16-0) clinched the Missouri Valley title outright with the victory.

Angie Davison added eight points and four rebounds, while Megan Maahs and Ellie Herzberg contributed seven points each. Maahs led the Panthers in rebounding with nine.

The Panthers host Wichita State on Thursday in the McLeod Center. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. tip.
