CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The 25th-ranked Mount Mercy women's basketball team reached 800 wins on Saturday, and did it in style, knocking off the top-ranked team in the country, Northwestern, 64-56, on day two of the Mount Mercy Classic at Hennessey Recreation Center.
Mount Mercy's big three of senior guards Emily Greiner and Micha Mims and sophomore forward Amanda Frost combined for 56 of the team's 64 points. Greiner, who joined the 1,000-point club last weekend, scored 26 points and grabbed four rebounds. She hit four more 3-pointers and sits in fourth place on Mount Mercy's career chart.
Mims nailed three triples and finished with 16 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Frost added her second double-double of the season, scoring 14 points to go along with 13 rebounds. That helped the Mustangs (3-2) to a 35-29 advantage on the glass.
Northwestern (3-2), the two-time defending NAIA Division II national champion, struggled from long range, shooting just 2-of-16 from beyond the arc. Kami Kuhlmann and Alli Dunkelberger had 13 points each for the Red Raiders. They were joined in double digits by Samantha Kleinsasser with 10 points. Kendra De Jong finished with a team-high six rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Mount Mercy reached the 800-victory plateau in its 40th season of women's basketball. The Mustangs have won at least 20 games in 21 of those seasons, including a school-record 31 victories in 1980-81, 1993-94 and 1994-95. Mount Mercy's storied history also includes 10 national tournament berths and seven conference championships.
Greiner and Mims scored 26 and 24 points, respectively, in Friday's 71-56 victory over previously unbeaten Bethel (Ind.). Greiner, who has scored at least 26 points in every game but Mount Mercy's season opener, knocked down five 3-pointers and went 11-of-13 at the free throw line. She also had five steals.
Mims hit three treys and ended up 7-of-8 from the foul line as the Mustangs went 24-of-28 from the charity stripe as a team. Frost chipped in six points and four rebounds, junior guard Brooke Quigley five points and three boards. Senior guard Becca Lampe had a team-high seven rebounds.
Mount Mercy, which will not play at home again until Dec. 7, is part of the Cornell Classic next weekend in Mount Vernon. The Mustangs take on Carroll on Friday at 8:00 p.m. and Aurora (Ill.) on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
