KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Mount Mercy may have fallen out of the top 25, but the Mustangs are still receiving votes and sit at No. 30 in the first regular season NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the NAIA announced on Monday.
Mount Mercy (5-4) has faced a difficult early-season schedule, but owns a victory over the preseason No. 1, Northwestern. That victory over the Red Raiders was also the 800th in the history of the women's basketball program. The Mustangs lost to a pair of teams currently in the top 15, fifth-ranked Hastings (Neb.) and 13th-ranked Morningside.
Indiana Wesleyan owns the top spot in both the men's and women's polls, with the women's squad taking over the No. 1 position with an 8-0 mark. Briar Cliff, Ozarks (Mo.), Concordia (Mich.) and Hastings round out the top five. With 37 points, Mount Mercy is at No. 30 overall. The Midwest Collegiate Conference has two teams in the top 11, with Grand View coming in at No. 6 and St. Ambrose sitting at No. 11
Mount Mercy will face Grand View in the MCC opener for both teams this weekend. The Mustangs and Vikings square off on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Sisam Arena in Des Moines.
