Women’s basketball: Iowa, Iowa State drop games to ranked teams
Gazette staff and wire reports
Nov. 27, 2015 11:18 pm
Six-foot-4 forward Jonquel Jones was a monster in the paint, scoring 23 points and grabbing 26 rebounds for No. 23 George Washington as it upended No. 21 Iowa, 81-77, in double overtime on Friday at the Lone Star Showcase in Cedar Park, Texas.
'We could not keep Jonquel Jones off the boards,” Iowa Coach Lisa Bluder said. 'She's a monster to box out. She's a tough matchup.”
Iowa (5-1) trailed by as many as eight points with 4:32 to play, but rallied to tie the game on a jump shot by Chase Coley with 28 seconds left.
The Hawkeyes led 69-67 during the first overtime after a Coley layup with 35 seconds left, but Jones tied it up to force the second overtime. GW (6-1) won that period, 12-8.
Iowa hit just 1 of 13 from 3-point range in the second half and overtime.
'We really thought we had momentum, and overtime was our time,” Bluder said. 'They had two starters out with foul trouble; I thought we had the momentum.”
Coley finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Ally Disterhoft had 19 points and Whitney Jennings added 13.
Iowa concludes its time in Texas at 11 a.m. today vs. Houston (1-4).
DUKE 86, IOWA STATE 48 - The 15th-ranked Blue Devils upended the Cyclones in the second game of the Cancun Challenge on Friday in Cancun, Mexico.
Duke (5-1) won the rebounding battle 50 to 33, and Iowa State (2-2) hit just 2 of 21 from 3-point range.
'That was the most physical team we have ever played,” ISU Coach Bill Fennelly said on the Cyclone Network postgame radio show, 'and we didn't handle it at all.”
Bryanna Fernstrom was the bright spot for ISU. The 6-foot-5 center had 15 points and five rebounds.
The Cyclones also played most of the game without freshman guard Bridget Carleton, who left after getting hit in the jaw.
'She got hit in the mouth. A lot of blood. They took her to the doctor,” Fennelly said. 'She took a hell of a shot.
'Without her, that changes the dynamic of our team greatly. We basically played one of the best teams in the country without one of our best players. That's a recipe for disaster.”
Fennelly said that Fernstrom took a couple of tough shots, too, and guard Jadda Buckley 'couldn't play real well” due to a possible illness.
Iowa State faces Idaho (4-1) at 10 a.m. Saturday in its final game in Cancun. The Vandals lost to Duke, 74-68, in the first round.
