DES MOINES, Iowa -- Five Mustangs scored in double figures and the Mount Mercy women's basketball team used a huge free throw and rebounding advantage to knock off sixth-ranked Grand View, 80-63, in a Midwest Collegiate Conference opener on Saturday at Sisam Arena.
Mount Mercy, a team receiving votes in the latest NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Top 25 Coaches' Poll, outscored Grand View, 35-8, at the free throw line. The Mustangs (6-4, 1-0 MCC) went to the foul line 45 times compared to only 12 attempts by the Vikings (7-4, 0-1 MCC). It's Mount Mercy's second win over a top-10 team this season. The Mustangs beat the No. 1 team in the nation, Northwestern, 64-56, on Nov. 12 in Cedar Rapids.
Sophomore forward Amanda Frost scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Mustangs, who outrebounded the Vikings, 38-25. Senior guard Micha Mims scored 10 of her 17 points at the free throw line and senior guard Laura Lippert added 15 points and five boards. Senior guard Becca Lampe chipped in 10 points and four rebounds, senior guard Emily Greiner 10 points, six boards and five assists. Junior guard Brooke Quigley finished with eight points and seven rebounds.
Grand View's first-team all-American, Jennifer Jorgensen, scored a game-high 23 points. She also ended up with five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Morgan Hamner was the only other Viking in double digits with 12 points to go along with four boards. Abby Medlik had nine points, Kristin Rasmussen six assists.
League play continues this week as the Mustangs host a pair of MCC opponents. Mount Mercy hosts William Penn on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and Clarke on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Hennessey Recreation Center.
