Mar. 6, 2024 4:13 pm, Updated: Mar. 7, 2024 8:36 am
DES MOINES — Carson Johnson is a ballplayer.
The senior guard came into the boys’ state basketball tournament as the leading scorer in Class 4A and did nothing to diminish his statistics, scoring 26 points as eighth-ranked Ankeny beat No. 6 Dubuque Senior, 60-47, Wednesday afternoon in a quarterfinal at Wells Fargo Arena.
Johnson was averaging 23.4 points per game coming into this event. He made 8 of 13 shots from the field, including 3 of 6 3-pointers here.
The Hawks (18-6) led for all but 18 seconds of this game. Senior (21-3) kept within striking distance most of the way, but never could climb that mountain completely.
Jacob Williams had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Rams. Nick Kennedy added 12.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy 66, Dallas Center Grimes 45
West Des Moines Valley 64, Johnston 57
Second-ranked Valley led for not quite 31 minutes of this 4A quarterfinal, beating Johnston for the third time this season.
Curtis Stinson Jr. scored 22 points to lead the Tigers (19-5). Kiki Deng and Trevin Jirak added 15 points apiece.
Top guard Zay Robinson was limited to just three points, as he played through an ankle injury incurred in Valley’s substate final win last week. Robinson was in a walking boot pregame.
Dalen Huston led Johnston (14-10) with 14 points. Prestige Taylor added 12 and Trovary Cavil 10.
Bettendorf 65, Cedar Falls 56
One team shot 56.5 percent, the other 33.3. Guess who won?
That’d be unranked Bettendorf, which got 20 points, 13 rebounds and four assists from Caden Wilkins to upend the fourth-ranked Tigers.
Cole Odefey and Ben Kerkhoff added 12 points apiece for Bettendorf (17-6), which plays Valley in Thursday night’s semifinals. The Bulldogs have won 11 in a row.
Cedar Falls (20-4) got 13 points from Anthony Galvin. The Tigers shot 39 3-pointers in the game, making seven.
Bettendorf led virtually all the way, including by 32-18 at halftime.
