WBB: Logic sisters enjoy closeness

NORTH LIBERTY - There was no revenge-of-the-younger-sibling moment for Brette Logic on last night.
She faced off against her older sister, Hawkeye guard Sam Logic, in an official organized game for the first time. After the hundreds of driveway one-on-one games that have discontinued because Brette would “get mad,” the sisters never found themselves guarding each other in their Game Time League match-up.
Did Brette Logic wish she had a chance to, say, steal the ball from her sister? Or score on her?
“No,” she said without hesitation after her team lost to Sam's, 90-71. “She plays a lot bigger game than I do. She's a lot stronger. I'd rather guard point guards - well, I guess she is a point guard, but smaller point guards.”
Instead, Brette said she found herself almost cheering from the bench when her sister would make a nice play. Sam Logic finished the game with an eye-popping stat-line: 28 points, 13 assists, and 10 rebounds.
Brette Logic didn't score in the game. But at certain moments, she looked a lot like her sister. When she led a fast break, she scanned the court and weaved around to find a passing angle. On defense, she snuck behind players a few times to poke the ball loose.
“She's got a little chip on her shoulder,” Sam Logic said. “She plays with an aggressiveness, goes after loose balls, really takes defense to heart. She doesn't want you to score on her. We're alike in that way.”
“Growing up, the only person I saw playing was Sam, so I had to learn something,” Brette Logic said. “Growing up in the driveway I had to steal the ball, because I'm not going to block her shot.”
Former Iowa player Hannah Draxten coaches Brette's GTL team. She said there's a resemblance on the court between the two sisters.
“I see it a lot,” she said. “They've grown up together, they've played together. I think that has a lot to do with it. Sam's a great player, and there's no better role model.”
The sisters come from Racine, Wis. By sheer coincidence, they've ended up at colleges less than an hour apart. Sam is an all-conference point guard for the Hawkeyes and Brette will start playing at St. Ambrose in the fall.
The Davenport university happened to be one of the few schools with Brette's intended major: Forensic psychology - “like Criminal Minds stuff,” she said. That coincidence thrilled her parents, who can watch both girls play in one trip this year. Brette Logic said she plans to come to Iowa City for most of Sam's Sunday games.
In the meantime, Brette is working on improving in the Game Time League. She's also worked on her jump shooting, agility and ball-handling skills with her sister.
That's good enough, even if they don't go head-to-head in game action.
“She can always play against me,” Sam Logic said. “Playing against different competition is good for her. This is a next step up for her, a really good experience. If she ever needs the practice, she can guard me whenever she wants.”
