UPDATE: Iowa State announced Saturday morning that freshman Nick Noskowiak will not return to the team.
According to online court documents, Noskowiak was charged with first-degree recklessly endangering safety — a felony — as well as criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct — misdemeanors — on Aug. 10.
'Nick informed us Friday night of his decision to step away from basketball and we agree that it is in his best interest and the best interest of Iowa State for us to mutually part,' Cyclones coach Steve Prohm said in a release. 'We appreciate his effort when he was with us and wish him and his family the best in the future.'
'I have decided to step away from the Iowa State men's basketball program,' Noskowiak said. 'I wish Coach Prohm, my former coaches and teammates the best of luck in the future and I appreciate the opportunity they gave me to be a part of their team.'
Prohm first learned of Noskowiak's charges when ISU returned from Spain on Thursday, a trip Noskowiak was not a part of. The original story from Prohm's Friday presser is below.
AMES — Cyclones coach Steve Prohm suspended Noskowiak indefinitely Thursday as details emerged of multiple charges filed against the 6-foot-2 freshman point guard in his home state of Wisconsin during the summer.
According to online court documents, Noskowiak was charged with first-degree recklessly endangering safety — a felony — as well as criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct — misdemeanors — on Aug. 10.
The Ames Tribune first reported the charges against Noskowiak on Thursday afternoon.
'We're just gathering more information right now and visiting with his family,' Prohm told reporters Friday. 'I'll probably talk with his mom tonight. All we can do right now is gather more information and deal with it day by day.'
Noskowiak originally signed with Marquette, but asked to be released from his letter of intent and signed with Iowa State on April 28.
According to online court documents, Noskowiak was arrested May 15 in Waukesha County for refusing to submit to a test for intoxication after he was stopped for unsafe lane deviation. He was charged with his first offense of OWI on May 20.
Prohm told reporters Friday he had no prior knowledge of the May or August charges until Thursday when Iowa State returned from its foreign trip to Spain. Noskowiak was not present on the trip for what Prohm referred to as 'family issues.' Prohm also said he does not believe at this time Noskowiak will attend the first day of ISU classes Monday.
'I want to help Nick, want to help his family and go from there,' Prohm said. 'That's our job is to try and help these kids.'
