WILLIAMSBURG — There’s not a name to the play, but there certainly is a motive.
Get the ball to Savanna Wright, and let her go.
Wright drove the lane for the go-ahead basket with 6 seconds left in overtime, and Class 3A fifth-ranked Mount Vernon rallied past No. 2 Williamsburg, 40-38, in a Wamac Conference cross-divisional girls’ basketball game Friday night at Williamsburg High School.
“It’s kind of a play at the end of a shot clock,” said Wright, who scored 20 points, including all seven in overtime for the Mustangs (5-2).
“They were overplaying the screen, and I saw an opening.”
Williamsburg (4-1) had a final opportunity, but Kennedy Skaggs’ off-balance left-handed attempt was off the mark.
The Raiders led virtually all game, by as many as 12 points late in the third quarter. But Wright led Mount Vernon back.
With her team still trailing by seven points with 1:46 left in regulation, Wright scored an inside basket, then added another hoop to make it 33-30.
Then Quinn Pershing — who had been 1-of-12 from the field — hit a clutch 3-pointer to send the game into extra time.
Williamsburg’s Zoe Allen opened the overtime scoring, then Wright tied it with a pair of free throws.
Wright’s 3-pointer put Mount Vernon in front, 38-35, with 1:03 left, but Channing Becker answered on the other end.
With Taylor Franck out, probably through the holiday break, with a leg ailment, more of the onus falls on Wright and Courtney Franck.
“I realize I’ve got to take over a little bit more if we want to be a winning team,” said Wright, who hit 7 of 14 shots and added nine rebounds and four assists.
Pershing added eight points for the Mustangs.
Allen led Williamsburg with 15 points. Becker tallied nine, all from long range.
