CEDAR RAPIDS — Scott DeJong became the 10th girls’ basketball coach in Iowa history to reach the 700-win plateau when Class 5A third-ranked Ankeny Centennial defeated No. 5 Pleasant Valley, 39-26, as part of Rivalry Saturday at Johnson Hall.
DeJong owns a 700-183 record in 36-plus seasons.
Centennial (1-0) jumped to an 11-0 lead, then Pleasant Valley countered with a run to take a brief 14-13 advantage.
The Jaguars led 18-14 at halftime, 29-20 after three quarters, then went on to beat Pleasant Valley here for the second straight year.
Tillie Smith hit four 3-pointers, all in the second half, and scored 12 points to lead Centennial.
Quinn Vice paced Pleasant Valley (0-1) with eight points.
