The fifth-ranked Cougars put the clamps and pulled away from Davenport North in the second quarter, rolling to a 62-34 victory for the Class 4A Substate 6 championship Tuesday night at Kennedy. It is the Cougars fourth straight state berth.
The drought is over for the Linn-Mar boys’ basketball team. The Lions beat West Des Moines Dowling, 62-50, Tuesday night in a Class 4A substate final basketball game, qualifying for next week’s state tournament in Des Moines. Linn-Mar hasn’t been there since 2012.

Girls state basketball: Wells Fargo Arena was evacuated for 20 minutes at halftime of ELC-Cherokee 3A game. The reason was believed to be a ventilation issue with one of the concession stands in the arena.

Nelson Brands is an accomplished wrestler, winning three state titles and All-American honors in high school and college. He also trained under Hall of Fame coaches. Brands will bring those experiences to his new role as Iowa City Regina boys’ head wrestling coach.
