Dubuque Senior’s student section greeted Cedar Rapids Kennedy guard Trey McKowen with chants of “Slim Shady” because of McKowen’s similar blond hair style to rapper Eminem’s alter ego. But the Kennedy Slim Shady scored a game-high 17 points as his Class 4A top-ranked team beat No. 3 Senior, 57-34.
Senior guard Joe Bean scored one point in Class 4A top-ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s win last weekend over fifth-ranked Waukee. Thursday night, Bean had a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds as Kennedy knocked off 10th-ranked Linn-Mar, 79-53.

Technically, Kris Murray isn’t a two-way player with the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers. The seven-game MVC-CIML Shootout boys’ basketball event went down Saturday at the Alliant Energy Powerhouse in Cedar Rapids. In one of the marquee games of the inaugural event, defending Class 4A defending champion West Des Moines Valley used a fourth-quarter spurt to down Linn-Mar in a matchup of the second and fourth-ranked teams. Top-ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy also beat No. 7 Waukee.
Sophomore Samantha Becker registered 23 points, 12 rebounds and four steals, and her series of fourth-quarter free throws sent the Warriors past Class 4A No. 15 Western Dubuque, 58-48, in a matchup of two teams vastly improved from a year ago.
