Clear Creek Amana controlled two crucial facets of the game, and a late run enabled the Class 4A second-ranked Clippers to pull away from Iowa City West, 57-45, in a non-conference girls’ basketball game Tuesday night at West High School.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy won its first 22 games last boys’ basketball season, the first team in school history to sweep the regular season. It was top ranked and top seeded going into the Class 4A state tournament but was upset by Pleasant Valley in the first round. This season’s Cougars should be mighty good, too, with tons of talent and motivation from coming up short a season ago.
These aren’t the only quality Iowa high school boys’ basketball teams in the area this season. But it’s a pretty good start to the list.

Nelson Brands is an accomplished wrestler, winning three state titles and All-American honors in high school and college. He also trained under Hall of Fame coaches. Brands will bring those experiences to his new role as Iowa City Regina boys’ head wrestling coach.
