But the Clippers newcomers performed well enough to topple Iowa City West, in a similar situation with a ton of newbies, 58-53, in a boys’ basketball opener Tuesday night at west.

Cael LaFrentz was a first-team all-state boys’ basketball player last season for the Decorah Vikings. The 6-foot-10 senior center averaged nearly 30 points per game. A couple of guys intended to play major roles on this season’s Cedar Rapids Xavier boys basketball team didn’t play Friday night due to injuries. The Saints, who will be a main contender for the Class 3A state championship when healthy, found a way to get past scrappy Cedar Rapids Washington, 67-57.
The Cougars claimed 10 weights and defeated Iowa City Liberty, 54-21, in a boys wrestling dual Thursday night at Kennedy. Liberty won the girls’ dual, 62-18.
