No. 1 Iowa City West earns state-record 80th home win in a row with rout of Iowa City High

IOWA CITY — It is a feat achieved by no other boys' basketball team in the history of the state of Iowa.

Class 4A No. 1 Iowa City West posted a relatively-comfortable 80-47 victory over crosstown rival Iowa City High Tuesday night at West High School. With the victory, the Trojans became the first team to win 80 home games in a row.

'That's pretty amazing,' West Coach Steve Bergman said. 'I think in 4A, it's really amazing because of the level of competition you play every night. No gimmees.'

The milestone surpassed Palmer High School, which had a streak of 79 consecutive home wins snapped in 1991. The Trojans have not lost at home since Dec. 21, 2010.

West (12-1, 9-1) jumped on City High with a 28-8 start to the contest. Junior Patrick McCaffery and senior Seybian Sims each scored 22 points. Sims converted nine free throws and drilled just his second 3-pointer this season.

'In practice, I shoot a decent amount,' Sims said. 'I just don't really do it in games because I shoot 80 percent in the paint, so there's no reason for me to go outside when we've got other guys that can shoot.'

West led by as many as 36 points late in the fourth quarter. Junior guard Dante Eldridge added 18 points for the Trojans, who have won 20 of 22 against the Little Hawks.

6-foot-8 sophomore Jeremie Kambomba posted 10 points for City High (3-10, 2-7 MVC), which will host Dubuque Hempstead on Friday.

Up next, West travels to Quincy, Ill. on Saturday to face two-time defending Kansas state champion Bishop Miege (10-1). This will be the third game against out-of-state competition this season for the Trojans.

'They know how hard that game is going to be,' Bergman said. 'So far, we've actually handled the out-of-state teams and I wasn't sure we were up to it at the beginning of the season. They just keep getting tougher. This one is the best of the three we've played so far.'
