The 2010-2011 Iowa Men's Basketball season had it's share of ups and downs. Close losses and close victories made for a mediocre season but it also generated a lot of excitement amongst Hawkeye fans for what's coming in the future.
One of the bright spots was the emergence of Iowa guard Devyn Marble. Devyn played extensively as a true freshman and was named a starter part way through the season.
I was able to chat with Devyn the other day about his first season as a Hawkeye, taking over against Purdue, his thoughts on Anthony Hubbard and his expectations for next season.
HB: Describe how the 2010-2011 season went for you as best you can?
DM: The season was real up and down and frustrating at times. With all the close losses we had that could have easily been wins. Makes you think like “what do we have to do to finish these close games.” Especially when your a freshman and your individual play is up and down all the time. But overall the season was fun and I enjoyed the learning experience.
HB: What was the win like against Purdue at the end of the season, and running the point for most of it with Bryce out?
DM: That was the best feeling I had all season after a win. I felt we played really well as a team. When Bryce went out with his cramps Coach McCaffery walked up to me and told me to “bring us home” so that's what I went out and tried to accomplish.
HB: Biggest improvement individually throughout the season?
DM: My biggest improvements I would have to say was my shot selection and ability to understand what's going on throughout the game.
HB: How proud were you to win the Most Improved Player award at the banquet?
DM: I was shocked because I thought you had to already play a year to get “Most Improved” but I was happy the coaches felt I improved throughout the season enough to deserve that award.
HB: What are you working on this offeason? Who are you working out with?
DM: I've been working on my shooting, ball handling and just getting stronger and putting weight up. My defense has improved a lot to just because of the mindset and mentality I have now developed. I've been working out with my high school coaches along with pros that come home from overseas.
HB: Thoughts on the recruitment of Anthony Hubbard, a swing guard like yourself and what he brings to the floor?
DM: I think we're very lucky to get a player like Anthony Hubbard. From what I heard he will be a great fit and contributor to our team next year.
HB: Do your plans this summer include playing in the PrimeTime League at all?
DM: Yes
HB: Are you excited to play Clemson at home in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge?
DM: It didn't really matter to me who we played, I approach every game with the same mentality no matter who it is.
HB: Expectations for 2011-2012?
DM: My expectation for us next year is to make a run in the NCAA tournament.
