Mustangs pull away, beat Saints

CLINTON, Iowa -- Junior guards Micha Mims and Emily Greiner combined for 22 of Mount Mercy's 38 second-half points, leading the Mustangs to a 73-57 Midwest Collegiate Conference win over Ashford on Saturday at Kehl Arena.
Senior forward Tonya Davis got things rolling for the Mustangs, who led by as many as 19 points in the second period after leading by just two at the half. She scored 11 points in the opening period, and then Mims and Greiner took over after the break.
Mims finished with 17 points, four assists, and a pair of steals. Greiner tallied 15 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists. Davis ended up with 15 points and five assists.
Jordan Davis led Ashford (3-15, 0-4 MCC) with 15 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Lauren Strother added 14 points and four boards, and Kaela Hunt chipped in eight points, four rebounds, and four assists.
Mount Mercy hosts ninth-ranked St. Ambrose in an important MCC showdown on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Hennessey Recreation Center. The Queen Bees (14-2, 4-0 MCC) hold a half-game lead over the Mustangs (9-9, 4-1 MCC) and William Penn (12-6, 4-1 MCC) in the conference race.
