MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa -- Junior forwards Alex Coleman and Chad Underwood and senior forward Sam Kenyi powered the Mount Mercy men's basketball team to a pair of wins at the Kiwanis Classic hosted by Iowa Wesleyan, keeping the Mustangs undefeated through five games this season.
Coleman was relentless in Saturday's 82-74 victory over Judson (Ill.), who, like the Mustangs, received votes in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Top 25 Preseason Coaches' Poll. He posted game highs of 28 points and 16 rebounds, while Kenyi added 21 points and eight boards. Underwood chipped eight points, junior guard Markus Cocroft and senior guard David Campbell nine points apiece. Cocroft also had a game-high eight assists.
Mount Mercy blasted Trinity International (Ill.) on Friday, 108-80. Led by Underwood's 11-of-14 shooting performance, the Mustangs converted 55.4 percent of their field goal attempts in the win over the Trojans. Underwood finished with 31 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Kenyi tallied 14 points and five boards, Coleman 12 points and seven rebounds. Cocroft and Campbell dished out seven assists apiece.
Coleman was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and Underwood landed on the all-tournament team. Mount Mercy travels to Mount Vernon on Tuesday for a non-conference contest against Cornell at 8:00 p.m.
