MOUNT VERNON, Iowa -- Junior guard Markus Cocroft scored 24 points and handed out four assists to help the Mount Mercy men's basketball team remain unbeaten with a 66-60 victory over Cornell at the Small Multi-Sport Center on Tuesday night.
The Mustangs, which opened the 2009-10 campaign with five straight wins, moved to 6-0 this season behind Cocroft and the inside duo of senior forward Sam Kenyi and junior forward Alex Coleman. Kenyi posted another double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Coleman, the reigning Midwest Collegiate Conference Player of the Week, tallied 10 points and five boards.
Junior forward Chad Underwood, the team's leading scorer at 16.8 points per game, was held to just three points by the Rams (0-1). But Underwood snagged seven rebounds and blocked four shots to help Mount Mercy's cause. Senior guard David Campbell contributed nine points, freshman guard Jake Misener eight points and junior forward Dominic Zanella snared seven boards.
Alex Miller and Joey Guth scored 14 points each for Cornell. Reggie Greenwood added 13 points, six rebounds and five assists. Nick Bobb chipped in eight points, John Harth six in the Rams' season opener.
Mount Mercy travels to Iowa Wesleyan in Mount Pleasant again this weekend, this time to take on Ottawa (Kan.) at 6:00 p.m. at Ruble Arena.
