Lauren Wilson hits for 33; Springville sets scoring records in Rivalry Saturday rout
Orioles set event records for points in a quarter, half and game in 88-53 thumping of Nodaway Valley

CEDAR RAPIDS — The 17-year history of Rivalry Saturday has featured players who have gone on to play major-college basketball, teams that have gone on to win state championships.
Precious few have been better than Lauren Wilson was Saturday. And none have been as proficient as the Springville Orioles.
Class 1A fourth-ranked Springville set event records for points in a quarter (28), half (49) and game (88) in an 88-53 rout of 2A No. 2 Nodaway Valley at Johnson Hall.
“I feel like this is our coming-out year,” said Wilson, whose 33 points were one short of the record set by North Scott’s Grace Boffeli in 2019. “We have a lot more experience then anybody else. We have a deep bench.
“We knew (Nodaway Valley) liked to push the ball, but we do, too.”
Wilson scored 30 points in her varsity debut as a freshman. She hadn’t matched that since, but she surpassed it Saturday.
She hit 14 of 22 shots from the field, including 4 of 9 from long range, and split her two free throws.
This wasn’t a mediocre team that Springville routed. Nodaway Valley (1-1) returned much of its roster from last year’s 2A state-semifinal squad.
“We knew if we took care of the ball, we’d be OK,” Springville Coach Christina Zaruba said. “We knew that they wanted to play fast. I don’t think they realized, so do we.”
Wilson had 22 points at halftime as the Orioles (2-0) built a 49-29 lead.
And hopes that the Wolverines had of a second-half comeback were squashed immediately. Springville scored the first seven points of the third quarter for a 27-point lead, and it was smooth sailing from there.
Eight Orioles reached the scoring column. Hannah March came off the bench to tally 14 points, Morgan Nachazel added 12, Molly Stamp nine, Savannah Nealman eight.
Maddax DeVault scored 15 points to pace Nodaway Valley.
