Iowa State basketball adds Tennessee transfer Ray Kasongo

AMES - The Iowa State men's basketball team announced it officially signed Tennessee transfer Ray Kasongo and settled its roster for the upcoming season.

Kasongo will sit out as a red-shirt in 2016-17 per NCAA transfer rules, but will have two seasons of eligibility remaining. AllCyclones.com reported Kasongo verbally committed to the program over the weekend.

Iowa State now has filled all 13 available scholarships for Coach Steve Prohm's second season in Ames.

'We are excited to add Ray to our program,” Prohm said in a release. 'He has great size and athleticism and we are looking forward to working with him during his sit-out season as we continue to develop his skill set.”

At 6-foot-8 and 245 pounds, Kasongo spent one season at Tennessee where he played in 22 games during his sophomore year. The Toronto, Ontario native - who played AAU basketball with Grassroots Canada - was limited in game action, averaging 1.4 points and 1.5 rebounds in 5.5 minutes per game. He scored a season-high six points against Ole Miss.

Kasongo played his first season at College of Southern Idaho, a junior college. He played in all 34 games, helping the Eagles reach the round of 16 at the NJCAA tournament. Kasongo averaged 6.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.2 blocks in 15.6 minutes per game.
