The 2022 Iowa high school girls’ state basketball tournament tipped off Monday with seven quarterfinal games at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

CLASS 5A QUARTERFINALS
No. 1 Johnston 47, No. 9 West Des Moines Dowling 38
Iowa signee Jada Gyamfi tallied a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds as top-ranked Johnston (24-0) stayed undefeated. Anna Gossling led the Dragons with 19 points and Aaliyah Riley added 11.
Marin Heller scored 13 points for Dowling (18-7). Emma Gipple had 10 points and 11 boards.
No. 4 Pleasant Valley 52, No. 5 Iowa City High 47
Pleasant Valley (22-2) earned its first state tournament victory Monday afternoon. Halle Vice led the way with 16 points and 10 rebounds. A 21-14 third quarter was pivotal as PV overturned a 27-22 halftime deficit.
Iowa State commit Kelsey Joens scored a game-high 17 points for Iowa City High, which finished 19-5.

No. 7 West Des Moines Valley 49, No. 2 Des Moines Roosevelt 44
Meredith Rieker was 4-of-7 from 3-point range and scored 20 points as Valley (19-5) knocked off second-ranked Roosevelt (20-3). Elise Jaeger added 14 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for the Tigers.
Iowa State commit Arianna Jackson (14) and Trinity Cheatom (13) scored in double figures for Roosevelt, which never led.
No. 6 Waterloo West 67, No. 3 Ankeny Centennial 59
Waterloo West (22-2) gave the Mississippi Valley Conference a semifinal representative in 5A, becoming the second lower-seeded team to win on the tournament’s opening day.
Centennial ended the season 20-4.
CLASS 3A QUARTERFINALS
No. 1 Unity Christian 40, Davenport Assumption 37
Unranked Assumption (15-10) pushed Unity Christian (24-1) to the final seconds, but the defending champion Knights prevailed.
Tyra Schuiteman led three Unity Christian players in double figures with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Gracie Schoonhoven had 13 points, Jenna Bouma 10. Dawsen Dorey led Assumption with 13.
No. 4 Estherville-Lincoln Central 49, No. 5 Sergeant Bluff-Luton 34
Estherville-Lincoln Central (24-2) jumped out to a 13-3 lead after one quarter and never trailed. Kaitlyn Tendal (17) and Haylee Stokes (16) combined for 13 points, with Stokes going 10-of-11 from the free-throw line.
Sergeant Bluff-Luton got 11 points and nine boards from Emma Salker and ends its season at 20-5.
No. 2 West Lyon 38, No. 9 Roland-Story 23
West Lyon (24-1) limited Roland-Story (19-6) to 23.7-percent shooting in a first-round win.
South Dakota State commit Brooklyn Meyer nearly matched Roland-Story herself, scoring 21 points on 18-of-17 shooting. She also blocked three shots.
